| Ngoma pleads for help 02 June, 2006 | |
FRANCISTOWN - Francistown nominated councilor and businessman Peter Ngoma has pleaded with the business community to help resuscitate the Ngoma Challenge football tournament. The one-day spectacular was Ngomas brainchild and featured four northern football teams. However, the tournament appears to have died a silent death since people were not coming forth to help with sponsorship. Ngoma said in an interview that he initiated the tournament after realising that the Kabelano Charity Cup catered for mostly football teams in southern part of the country. He explained that the aim of the tournament was also to keep players in the northern region busy. It also gave them much-needed match practice before the commencement of the Coca-Cola Cup. I wanted to lend a helping hand in the development of football in the country through this tournament unfortunately it only featured for two years, in 2003 and 2004, respectively. I am hoping that some private companies will come to the rescue. I have not been doing well as a businessman and I felt it would not be wise to continue being the sole sponsor of the tournament and that is why I am appealing to other business people to come on board. Ngoma said he first sponsored the tournament to the tune of P10 000 but in the subsequent year, Wheels Filling Station and Edward Toteng increased the sponsorship to P20 000. Even though the tournament was named after him, Ngoma said the name was not an issue because what he wants now was to resuscitate it so that the northerners may also be catered for. I do not have any problem with changing the name of the tournament as long as it takes off again. Meanwhile, Ngoma dismissed allegations that he was using the tournament to gain political mileage, noting that he had been and was still involved in football at grassroots level. I do not think it is fair for people to say that I was using the tournament as a part of my 2004 campaign strategy to win the Francistown West constituency . Tafic Football Club won the inaugural tournament, while FC Satmos won it in the subsequent year. ECCO City Greens PRO Nelson Legwatagwata said the tournament was worthwhile as it brought teams from the north together. He also said it gave the players match practice as it was usually played during the league off-season. Tabengwa Mothusi of Tafic added that business people should come together and resuscitate the tournament. I think northern teams are feeling the void since the tournament was discontinued. Collen Rantsudu of TASC said the one-day soccer spectacular was a powerful tool that brought all stakeholders under one roof, thus brining unity in the football fraternity. Such tournaments give clubs the opportunity to try new players during off seasons and also attract a lot of supporters, he said. BOPA |
