Madagascar gains bloc membership
19 August, 2005

GABORONE - Madagascar has been granted membership to Southern African Development Community (SADC) after operating on a candidature status for some time.

The decision was made during the just ended two-day 25th SADC summit in Gaborone.

Speaking on the acceptance of his country into SADC, Madagascars President Marc Ravalomanana, declared his countrys readiness to abide by the ideals of the club.

I personally I am very much in favour of clear targets and time frames when it comes to co-operation, he said. Madagascar will do its best to enhance the average level of our joint achievements.

Ravalomanana said his country believed that good governance was the basis of sustainable development.

We have taken enormous efforts to fight corruption, reformation of the judiciary is on its way and within the next couple of months a major national program will be introduced to establish efficiency and transparency of public administration, he said.

As a new member, he requested that they be provided with clear understanding of the roles and aims of the various organisations to avoid repetitive discussions on the same issues.

He also advised that SADC should separate crucial issues from the less relevant ones for the moment in order to achieve greater impact.

Ravalomanana said the region ought to look at its comparative advantages and capitalise on them to meet the challenge from more developed regions.

He said southern Africas development and progress were hampered by a negative savings pattern low savings rates but high interest rates.

Every single one of our countries can do a great deal to cut down on budget deficits, he said. BOPA
