Wrong anthem shows some locals cant sing Fatshe leno la rona
05 August, 2005

GUMARE - It appears some Batswana confuse the National Anthem - Fatshe leno la rona - with those of other countries or simply do not know its words.

An embarrassing incident occurred recently during Village Health Committees competitions at Etsha Six in the Okavango area.

When the gathering was asked to sing the anthem there was a hushed silence from the audience until after a few minutes when somebody started singing.

But lo and behold it was a different tune. She was belting out the South African National Anthem.

The master of ceremonies for the day could not hide his disappointment.

Gabofele Kgatlwane said it hurts that after so many years of self-rule, some Batswana can not sing the anthem.

Also he said it was disheartening that they are familiar with other countries anthems.

Kgatlwane, who is a teacher at Etsha Six Primary School, urged Batswana to pull up their socks and promote their country to enhance national unity.

He urged Batswana to sing the anthem in all official occasions such as kgotla meetings and seminars instead of only when senior government officials come to address them.

The day was officially opened by the Maun Tebelopele Centre manager, Setshwano Airwa, who urged residents to test for HIV/AIDS at an early stage.

He stressed the need for the young generation to abstain from sex until they married. BOPA
