| Cllrs to raise fund for Tsunami victims 04 March, 2005 | |
GABORONE - Gaborone City councillors and members of the public will on April 23 participate in a 20km sponsored walk to raise funds for Tsunami disaster victims. Tsunami disaster fund-raising committee chairperson and deputy mayor Ezekiel Dube, said that the Management of Trans-Africa would be involved in the walk to help with the fund raising and had also promised to approach other companies to help financially. The 20km sponsored walk will start from Gaborone Technical College and proceed along the Western by-pass to Sir Seretse Khama Airport circle and end at the college campus. Dube said that city councillors had each contributed P200, senior council employees P100 each and that industrial class would each pop out P3. He added that they will open an account at Bank of Baroda and that the management of the bank has promised that they will make a contribution once the account is operating. He said that they would approach all media houses, adding that the mayor might address a press briefing. Dube added that they are in talks with the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to organise a soccer tournament to raise more funds. Dube said that the chairperson of the Botswana Music Union (BOMU) was part of the organising committee and that he would help them organise musicians to provide entertainment during the soccer tournament. The tournament will be played under the theme: "Let your light shine". He said that there would be music from local choral groups as well. He said that they would request for all the Gaborone MPs to participate in the walk and even to help financially. "We have been advised by President Festus Mogae and some councillors that the trust fund should not only focus outside but rather it should also address the needs of the local communities." He added that some companies, which have already made donations for Tsunami victims, told them that they would only make contributions if the trust fund included locals. Dube also proposed that the account be a permanent one so that the council could always help those in need and that the fund-raising be an annual event. In his opening remarks, Gaboronehe mayor Nelson Ramaotwana said that they should give first priority to projects that affected people's lives. Addressing a full council meeting on Friday, Ramaotwana said "self employed vendors and hawkers should be helped to get plots where they can operate". BOPA |
