| Book on prosecutions availed to police 15 February, 2005 | |
GABORONE Former assistant Registrar and Master of High Court in Lobatse Kofi Acquah-Dadzie has presented a book titled The policeman's guide to criminal law and evidence in Botswana to police commissioner Edwin Batshu. Presenting the book at the commissioner's office, Dadzie said it was specifically designed to assist the police, particularly prosecutors. Printed by Printer Masters of Lobatse, the book provides the elements of the offences, the duty of the investigator and prosecutor in each case and the manner of leading evidence to secure the conviction of the right person. The 360-page book contains several chapters, some defining law, why laws are made, the nature of criminal law, classification of criminal laws, ignorance of the law and bona fide claim of right, to mention a few. He said the ingredients of the offence or things that make the case are not proved beyond any reasonable doubt and as a result prosecutors end up losing their cases unnecessarily. "Therefore, this book is designed for them to fill up these gaps," he added. Dadzie said he had only managed to print 100 copies but he will increase the quantity when there is a demand as they are 6 000 police officers. The book sells at P275 per copy. The foreword of the book was written by the former police commissioner and now Botswana's high commissioner to Namibia, Norman Moleboge. In his foreword, Moleboge recommends the book to all law enforcement officers, saying it is a good foundation for both beginners and trainers in the field of law. The book is divided into two parts. The first deals with criminal law, particularly directed to the analysis of the various offences supported with local cases and practical examples, illustrating the operation of the criminal law. Part two deals with various aspects of the general principles of the law of evidence. Among others, the book contains an explanation of foreign words and phrases and an appendix of questions and answers as revision exercise. This is not the first book Dadzie has written about law. Some of his copies include Botswana Criminal cases and the one entitled Where to look for your law in Botswana. BOPA |
