| Boxers leave for France
14 July, 2004 | |
GABORONE - Botswana's Olympic bound boxers Lechedzani "Master" Luza and Khumiso Ikgopoleng are expected to leave for France on July 18 for an International training as part of their preparation for the Olympics billed for Athens, Greece, next month. "I expect to win a medal in Athens and I know that I will be competing with the best boxers in the world but I am not scared," Ikgopoleng said. The boxers' Cuban Coach, Ramon Drake said he was happy that both Luza and Ikgopoleng were fit, both mentally and physically and that their France excursion would be basically to fine tune them for the Olympics. Some of the participating countries in France will be Germany, France, Phillipines, Poland and Romania. Meanwhile, skills and boxing techniques were on display as boxers fought to outclass each other during an inter-club boxing tournament at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB) on Saturday. The tournament also saw Ikgopoleng and Luza dishing out a few lessons to their opponents to prove that they were still a hard nut to crack. In the 51kg division, UB's Luza fired hot blows to Edwin Makojane of Thebephatshwa prompting the referee to stop the bout in the second round because the latter could not take it anymore. Luza was quick and threw out straight punches that left Makojane worked out and in great pain below his ribs. "I was not in anyway strategic but just played my usual boxing. My opponent did not give me a tough game," he said. Another top local boxer, Khumiso Ikgopoleng, who recently received a bronze medal in the Copa Batalla de Carabobo tournament in Venezuela, came face to face with Mmoloki Nogeng (BDVC) in the 57kg bout. The people's favourite showed his strength and peppered Nogeng with fierce punches. Nogeng did not give up easily as he fought his way through to the last round. Ikgopoleng outclassed him by points. Yet another interesting bout to watch was between the former national team boxer, Dirang Thipe (BDVC), who failed to impress against up-coming boxer, Moses Kamera of Francistown in the middle weight (75kg) category. Jwaneng based Thato Batshegi and Kebonyethebe Ramaboana of Thebephatshwa defied the odds to outclass their opponents Gomotsang Gaasite (Francistown) and Boipuso Mosalakgotla (BDVC), in the 60kg and 57kg respectively. Other winners were Bonewamang Itumeleng, Montisetsi Lesaka, Thabo Thebe (BMC), Gaisang Matlhogonolo, France Motlotlegi, Botlhe Radube (Thebephatshwa). BDVC won three bouts while Molepolole College of Education lost all their four fights. BOPA |
