GABORONE - Barbados Prime Minister Owen Arthur arrives in Gaborone today for a six-day official visit to Botswana. During the visit, he will hold official talks with President Festus Mogae and meet with Speaker of the National Assembly Ray Molomo and leader of the opposition Nehemiah Modubule. Prime Minister Arthur is also scheduled to tour Orapa diamond mine, visit Camp Moremi in the world famous Okavango Delta and the tourism hotspot of Kasane. Arthur will visit Caratex Botswana, a textile manufacturing industry in Gaborone and attend a reception in honour of the Carribbean community in Botswana. He is scheduled to address a news conference at Botswana Television (Btv) studios before departing for the African Caribbean Pacific (ACP) conference in Maputo, Mozambique. Arthur assumed office as Barbados's fifth prime minister in 1994. Born in l949, he was educated at All Saints Boys School, the Coleridge, Parry School and Harrison College. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Economics from the University of the West Indies and has had a varied professional career. Arthur's political career began when he was appointed to the Barbados Senate in l983. He was elected to the House of Assembly the following year and served as leader of the opposition between l993 and l994. He led the Barbados Labour Party to victory in the general elections of 1994, l999, and 2003, the first instance since independence that a political party had been successful at the polls in three consecutive elections. Barbados, with a population of about 300 000, is a parliamentary democracy and member of the Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth 11 as titular head of state. The capital Bridgetown has a population of 136 000 inhabitants. Barbados is located in the Atlantic Ocean and its nearest neighbours are the islands of St Lucia and St Vincent. The island lies alone in the Atlantic almost completely surrounded by corral reefs. The economy is tourism led, followed by sugar and light manufacturing industries. The island whose chief crops are sugar, vegetables and cotton has significant crude oil reserves. Barbados which has compulsory education between the ages of five and 16 boasts the highest literacy rate in the developing world at 97 per cent. BOPA |
