Botswana clinches first victory at NZ championships
04 February, 2004

GABORONE - Botswana has at long last tasted victory at the on-going 2004 International Softball Federation Men's Softball World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand.

According to results posted on the tournament's website, the Zebras on Monday trounced Hong Kong 8-1 to register their first victory since the games started.

The team had earlier lost 0-2 to the US and 0-1 to the Czech Republic. But the victory celebration against Hong Kong on the fifth day of the championships was short-lived as the Botswana crashed 1-5 to Argentina later in the day.

Against Hong Kong, Botswana started the game on a high note, scoring seven runs in the first inning against one run.

Led by internationally acclaimed pitcher Tony Moyo, Botswana made it 8-1 in the second inning. Both teams failed to score any points in the subsequent innings.

In their game against Argentina, Botswana started on a sound footing, denying their opponents any scoring chances in the first three innings, but allowed them to score in the fourth inning.

Argentina increased the tally to 5-0 in the sixth inning. Botswana snatched a consolation when Petrus Sebina hit an automatic in the last inning.

Botswana lost again 0-8 against Britain yesterday.

Botswana will play its last Pool-B game against Japan on February 4. Japan is ranked second in the world and Botswana is likely to find it tough to beat.

Japan has so far won two games beating Great Britain 9-2 and Argentina 1-0, but lost 3-7 to the USA. As losing finalists in the 1999 championships in South Africa, they will strive to proceed to the top eight.

So far Hong Kongremain the only team that has not won a single game in the tournament which ends on February 8. Results of games played on February 2 were:- Canada 3, Australia 2; Venezuela 3, Netherlands 2; Japan 1, Argentina 0; Canada 8, Philippines 0; Venezuela 4, Samoa 7; South Africa 2, Australia 7; Czech Republic 7, Great Britain 0; New Zealand 18, Netherlands 5; Japan 3, USA 7.
