Prisoners awarded certificates
14 October, 2003

Twenty-Five prisoners have been awarded certificates in literacy education during the commemoration of a mini literacy day at Gaborone Prison.

Out of 170 prisoners who enrolled for the Adult Education Programme (Thuto ga e golelwe) only 25 were successful.

Speaking at the occasion, Nnagolo Tau, an official of the Department of Non- Formal Education, said education "equips an individual with skills" to cope with day to day living.

The adult education programme, he said, "does not only teach people how to read and write but also enlightens" them on income generating projects, which they could use to better their lives.

He said though they did not encourage people to commit crime and go to prison, non-formal education could thrive because participants were found in one place, thus making it easy to disseminate information on education to a larger group.

Tau said imprisonment did not spell an end, because it presented an opportunity for one to reform through learning new skills.

While in prison, inmates could learn practical skills that they would apply outside and become productive law-abiding citizens that contribute to the economy".

Tau urged those who have enrolled to be committed as the main objective is self-development. He said illiteracy could compromise privacy.

Since an individual cannot read or write, they rely on someone else to read messages on their cell phones and fill in business and application forms, he cautioned. BOPA
