Tongue kiss lands man in hospital
11 August, 2003

A 38-year-old man of Sebina who had his tongue severed while attempting to rape a woman in Francistown is recovering at Nyangabgwe Hospital.

It is alleged that his 22-year-old victim, of Kgaphamadi in Francistown, bit off the tongue when he forced it into her mouth in an attempt to kiss her during the rape attempt on July 27.

The woman was accosted while heading home from a night of entertainment at a nearby bar. Police officers are guarding the man at the hospital.

Dental specialist Dr Tumelo Mazhani told BOPA that the piece of tongue could have been re-attached if he had reached the hospital within six hours after the accident. Also it could have been possible to do the operation if it was kept in a similar environment as the remaining piece in his mouth.

Superintendent Oratile Setswalo of Tatitown police told BOPA that the man did not seek medical attention after the ordeal and was arrested at Mautlakgang.

And because of his injury, his speech is inaudible.

The part of his tongue that had been bitten off was being kept by the police for forensic tests.

Meanwhile, Nata police have released the names of the five people who died when a Sladden Construction Company vehicle overturned along the Nata/Kasane road on July 30.

They are: Moagi Gabanakutlo, 48, Pontsho Mmolotsi, 24, both of Radisele, Morries Marotho, 48, of Marobela, Reetsang Kebaitsang, 46, of Lesenepole and Oitsile Gabatsalwe, 24, of Nshakshogwe.

The police officer based in Nata who fell off his motor bike while rushing to the scene and was admitted to Nyangabwe Hospital under critical condition, is said to be recovering.

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old Form Five student at McConnel College in Tutume was found hanging from a tree near his home in Nswazwi on August 4.

Superintendent Seabe Maboka of Tutume police said the young man used a rope to hang himself and did not leave any message.
