GCC spends P3m on market stalls
04 August, 2003

Market stalls that the Gaborone City Council (GCC) is constructing at the Gaborone station bus rank and BBS Mall at a cost of P3 million are expected to be in operation in February 2004.

The 50 stalls (25 at each place) are at roofing level and will cost P384 in monthly rental when operational, the council's principal commercial affairs officer, Edith Maje said.

She explained that they already have tenants for the stalls, adding that the rentals are bit higher than for the existing ones as they are more spacious and of a higher standard. The council will be responsible for the utilities.

Meanwhile, the city's senior commercial officer Mmaphefo Moatlhodi has complained about the increasing rental arrears of some tenants of the council's stalls at the station.

Although she did not know the total amount, Moatlhodi said the arrears were substantial, citing one tenant who owes close to P4 000.

She noted that some tenants have rented out the stalls to other people and are pocketing the P55 a month rent instead of passing it on to the council.

The council is trying to recoup the money through customary courts in Gaborone, but they are taking too long to deal with the defaulters.

Moatlhodi said the construction of the new market stalls was an attempt to curb unhygienic practices such as cooking in the open, which is prevalent at the Gaborone station. BOPA
