Mothibe assures American Peace Corps of support
27 March, 2003

American Peace Corps posted to Kgatleng District have been assured of unqualified support.

Acting Bakgatla chief Kgosi Mothibe Linchwe made the assurance, saying during their stay in Kgatleng they would be given all the support and care that they need from his tribe.

Welcoming 17 US volunteers at Rasesa Lodge at a ceremony to mark the handing over of the trainees to their host families, Mothibe said he was hopeful that after their 10-week orientation in the district, they would have become fluent in speaking Sekgatla language.

He said the parents, who had accepted to host them in their homes, had demonstrated that volunteerism was “very important in Botswana” which was why government had found it fit to accept an offer of peace corps from the United States.

Peace corps country director Jack Timmons thanked Bakgatla for accepting to “accommodate in homes people that you do not know for the benefit of the country”.

He said he had all the trust the peace corps would behave in an acceptable manner. Turning to the trainees, Timmons appealed to them to treat Batswana parents, who have pledged homes, like their biological parents to make their stay in Botswana enjoyable.
