Council to continue issuing special hunting licenses to Basarwa
28 December, 2001

Ghanzi District Council Secretary Ringo Ipotseng says the council will continue issuing special hunting licences to Basarwa remaining in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) despite the withdrawal of other services.

Speaking in an interview last week, Ipotseng said services that will be cut include payment of Old Age Pension and destitution allowances, provision of mobile health services, bowsing of drinking water and orphan care.

The Ghanzi District Council decided mid this year to stop providing services to Basarwa residing inside the CKGR because of the high cost which amount to over P55 000 every month.

Some 14 Basarwa were relocated from the reserve recently, leaving behind 559 others.

Those who relocate are compensated after an assessment of their property.

They are also allocated residential or arable land as per their preference.

The issue of relocation from the CKGR started in 1985 when officials of the then Ministry of Commerce and Industry were on a fact finding mission to investigate the situation in the reserve.

It discovered that people who were staying in the reserve were rapidly involved into settled agricultural activities and that there was increasing conflict between wildlife and agricultural users.

Government viewed the situation as not auguring well for the future welfare and development of Basarwa in the game reserve as they could not enjoy government programmes and other services as well as develop themselves.
