Tsodilo hills declared world heritage site
21 December, 2001

Tsodilo Hills have been declared a world heritage site.

The declaration was made by the World Heritage Committee at its convention in Helsinki, Finland last week.

Tickey Pule, director of the National Museum which has been pushing hard for such recognition of the event was a milestone in the achievement record of the institution and the country as a whole.

"The declaration is unique since it is the first time in the history of Botswana that a heritage site is recognised internationally," she said in a news release.

"As such, it will go a long way in enhancing the museum's mission of promoting Batswana's pride in their identity and heritage.

"It (declaration) indicates the world recognises Botswana as a nation that is fully capable of taking care of the site on behalf of the global community which obviously has interest in accessing it as a tourist destination."

Pule said the declaration comes after Botswana ratified the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) convention on the protection of World Heritage sites in October 1998.

By so doing Botswana was pledging to protect and preserve cultural and natural heritage within her territory.

Pule said since then effort has gone in to identifying suitable sites for inclusion in the World Heritage list as well as preparing proposals to be presented to the World Heritage committee.

The proposals include detailed descriptions of plans for the suitable management and protection of the site as well as justifications as to why it should be considered for recognition as a world heritage site.
