Lesotho operation costs P13m
07 July, 2000

BOTSWANA spent P13 062 478 on the deployment of Botswana Defence Force (BDF) troops in Lesotho, acting minister for presidential affairs and public administration Tebelelo Seretse said in Parliament this week.

Answering a question from Lobatse MP Nehemiah Modubule, Ms Seretse said the BDF troops went to Lesotho under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community.

Ms Seretse said BDF's first mission in 1998 was Operation BOLEAS which sought to prevent anarchy through military intervention to disarm and contain armed units.

She said the second mission, Operation MALUTI, was to retrain members of the Lesotho Defence Force and the Lesotho Royal Mounted Police's counter crime unit.

Government spent P5 million on personnel allowances and other incidentals for the first operation. The money covered foreign deployment allowance, family allowance, transport, rations and other costs. The government expended P8 062 478 on the second operation.

Ms Seretse said the BDF troops were completely withdrawn from Lesotho by May 27, this year. The BDF peace operation in Lesotho was successful and all objectives of the mission were accomplished, she added.

Mr Modubule had asked the acting minister to inform the House how much the government spent on allowances and other incidentals for BDF members who were deployed in Lesotho.

He also wanted the minister to explain whether the objective of the mission was accomplished and to state whether soldiers had been recalled. BOPA
